Docent Volunteer

Do you love animals an enjoy meaningful engagement with people?  Want to make a positive impact on wildlife and habitats? Consider becoming a docent at the L.A. Zoo!

What is a Docent
Docents are volunteer educators and zoo guides at the L.A. Zoo. They engage with visitors, sharing insights about the Zoo and the natural world, and serve as advocates for conservation efforts. Through training, docents gain a deep understanding of the flora and fauna at the Zoo, and learn skills to effectively connect with guests, including tours, interpreting at habitats, and facilitating educational activities.   

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years of age and enjoy interacting with people of all ages. 
• Committed to volunteering at least 100 hours per year (60 hours for high school students), for a minimum of two years. 
• Passionate about wildlife and conservation, though this role does not work directly with animals.  

Special Requirements

• Complete the 19-week course in zoology, ecology, and conservation programs at the L.A. Zoo.
• Maintain a membership with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA).
• Submit proof of a negative tuberculosis test annually.
• Complete a fingerprint background check.
• Attend an annual update session and pass an annual test with a minimum score of 90%.
