Zoo Update with GLAZA Interim President Dawn Petersen-Amend

Giant otter Misty plays near a small waterfall.
Gregarious and noisy, giant otter calls include purring, squeaking, growling, and a low-frequency call that can be heard underwater. With webbed feet, a torpedo-shaped body, dense fur, and a strong, flat tail, giant otters are built for life in the river. Come and watch their antics in our Rainforest of the Americas. A huge thank you to each of our members, your families, and your guests who attended this year’s L.A. Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow. Your generous support helped to make this the most successful Zoo Lights season ever! A total of 29,511 member tickets were purchased, helping GLAZA generate record-setting revenue to support the Zoo. Here are some fun food stats from this year’s event: hungry Zoo Lights guests purchased more than 51,000 churros, 9,500 gallons of hot cocoa, 8,000 s’mores kits, and 900 cookie decorating kits! We are tremendously appreciative for our members’ support—thank you!

As spring arrives and the days get longer and warmer, your L.A. Zoo is an inspiring place to spend a sunny morning or enjoy a whole day. The recent rains have brought new greenery, and this is also the prime season to view animal babies. To celebrate springtime, wildlife, our community, and the planet we all call home, we have planned several fun and exciting Wild Weekends for you to enjoy at the Zoo this season. The weekend of March 22 and 23 will feature Spring Fling, where guests will enjoy special animal feedings, an interactive music program hosted by The BeatBuds, education stations highlighting butterflies and scent detection skills, and a fun art demonstration. In celebration of Earth Day, we will present Wild for the Planet from April 18–20, with an emphasis on green inspiration. Weekend activities will include honey tasting, photos with Big Bunny for an additional fee, storytelling, an Earth Expo, and performances by 3rd Rock Hip Hop. Finally, on May 3 and 4 we invite you to enjoy Dia de los Niños/Children’s Day. This celebration of children will feature bilingual storytelling, cultural performances, crafts, and education activities. Be sure to visit the L.A. Zoo website for further information and details about all our Wild Weekends.

Finally, keep an eye on the L.A. Zoo website for upcoming member events and tours. Our specially designed, docent-led tours offer small groups a unique look at the Zoo. Be sure to make a reservation to enjoy these insider visits to the Zoo. Whether you choose to attend one or several of our spring events, sign up for a special tour, or simply decide to visit the Zoo to enjoy the weather, animals, and botanical wonders, all of us at GLAZA look forward to welcoming you to your L.A. Zoo this spring. We hope your visits are inspiring, relaxing, and renewing as you appreciate this special place and celebrate the arrival of spring.
