As the need to protect our wildlife and vanishing habitats increases, the role of animal keepers in zoo education and outreach has become essential. Because they work most closely with the animals, keepers offer unique professional and personal insights. During the third week of July each year (July 18–24), zoos across the country celebrate National Zoo Keeper Week. Created by the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK), it recognizes the accomplishments of animal care professionals who are not only responsible for the wellbeing of animal ambassadors in America’s zoos, but who in many cases are involved in conservation causes that make a difference for wildlife in the field around the world. This year’s observance will highlight the importance of great teamwork in providing excellent animal care and in pursuing conservation efforts. Animal keepers are an important part of the L.A. Zoo’s conservation mission. Join us in expressing thanks by liking and sharing our Keeper Week posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
