Selig Legacy Society Luncheon September 22, 2010 - 8:45am The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) is proud to honor Zoo supporters who have taken the extraordinary step of including GLAZA in their estate plans with a special luncheon and behind-the-scenes presentation. Through their generosity, Selig Society members permanently enhance the welfare of the Zoo’s animal residents and ensure the vitality of the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens for generations to come. Observing Animals: Behavioral Studies in Zoos (UCLA Extension) September 23 through December 16, 2010 This course, taught by Los Angeles Zoo Director of Research Dr. Cathleen Cox, provides an introduction to methods and techniques of studying animal behavior. Topics include how to recognize individual animals, producing accurate descriptions of behavior; recognizing various behaviors and organizing them into an ethogram; and methods of collecting quantitative data. The emphasis is on practical firsthand applications of such techniques to behavioral problems and studies. Besides lectures and demonstrations, participants conduct a study project on selected species at the Los Angeles Zoo. Credit students receive homework assignments each week and are required to engage in at least 15 hours of observational study at the Zoo. No prerequisites. Enrollment limited. 21st Annual Los Angeles Zoo Photo Day November 7, 2010 - 7:30am - 4pm Presented jointly by Paul's Photo and the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, L.A. Zoo Photo Day is a fantastic opportunity for film and digital shutterbugs of all levels of expertise. Paul's staff of experts and representatives from the greatest brands in photography will be on hand to assist you for a full day of photography and education, including informative workshops to improve your wildlife photography techniques. Participants may take advantage of limited-loan equipment from major manufacturers and enjoy a continental breakfast, a catered lunch, a T-shirt, and a full day of photography.
