Beastly Ball Update
As dusk fell over the zoo and our inhabitants became a bit more active, the 44th Annual Beastly Ball got underway. Guests enjoyed an exclusive walk through the zoo grounds with animal encounters, including some feedings and introductions. Guests also enjoyed martini glasses filled with mashed potatoes with delectable toppings from Food Fetish Catering, Cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes and from The Original Yummy Cupcake, Hotdogs from Pink’s, and many more delicious treats, and of course drinks!
Honoree Heather Mycoskie, who was awarded for her work with the mountain gorillas of Virunga National Park and her work through her newly launched TOMS Animal Initiative, gave a speech that told the tale of how she became involved in animal welfare, a trait she “Luckily inherited from [her] mom.”
The International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) was celebrated and recognized for their work on the 50th anniversary of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They presented a thank you video that reminded guests why the IUCN is an important tool for many different organizations. They also revealed a new goal for IUCN; to analyze 160,000 species by 2020. Under the stars and quick glimpses of fireflies, together we raised 1.1 million dollars to help make the Zoo a more exciting, enjoyable place, for our animals and our guests.
